A Commission on the Future of Health Care has been established by New York State. According to the state, the 13-member advisory body will work to build evidence-based and strategic recommendations for the state’s healthcare system to ensure it can best serve the needs of New Yorkers.
“This is a transitional moment for the health care system. Patient preferences are shifting, new technologies are emerging, and we are still feeling the ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Governor Hochul said. “I have assembled this Commission – with some of the top health care experts in the country – to help us build a resilient health care system that leads the nation and delivers every New Yorker the care they deserve.”
New York State Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald said, “Under the direction of Governor Hochul, New York State is creating a Commission on the Future of Health Care to address the challenges facing our recommendations to ensure that New Yorkers receive the health care they need and deserve.”
The Commission will provide ongoing strategic recommendations to transform the healthcare system in New York State, with a goal of ensuring that the limited resources of the State and other healthcare payers are optimized to enable the delivery of accessible, equitable, high-quality care for all New Yorkers, through a resilient health care ecosystem and a strong health care workforce. It will be tasked with identifying strategies to ensure the long-term resilience of New York’s healthcare system.
The Commission includes some of the foremost practitioners and policy experts in New York and nationally, with experience in health care delivery, insurance, long-term care, workforce, health equity, innovation, and beyond. The Commission will be Chaired by Sherry Glied, Ph.D. Glied is currently the Dean of NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service and has had an illustrious career in health policy, including serving as the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation at the federal Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama. The Commission will provide strategic guidance to the Governor, including formal recommendations submitted annually. The Commission’s first recommendations will be due before the end of 2024 and will be released publicly. The Commission will focus on the full continuum of care, including physical and behavioral health, and recommendations will span policy, regulation, funding, and other strategies to drive long-term transformation within the healthcare system.
