Even though the $980 million Mega Millions jackpot was won in Georgia, New York still saw significant benefits from the ticket sales leading up to the November 14 drawing.
According to state officials, the jackpot run, which began on July 1 and continued through 40 drawings, generated $132.8 million in Mega Millions ticket sales in New York. All state profits—$46.5 million—are constitutionally dedicated to New York’s K–12 public schools. Lottery retailers across the state earned an additional $8 million in commissions.
“New Yorkers continue to win big when massive jackpots generate excitement across the state,” said Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer. “The best part is that our public schools reap the benefits of every ticket sold.”
While the jackpot winner was not from New York, several New Yorkers claimed large prizes during the roll-up period. In total, players won $8.8 million in prizes of $20,000 or more, including:
- One $2 million 2X second prize winner
- One $3 million 3X second prize winner
- Eleven $20,000 2X third prize winners
- Eight $30,000 3X third prize winners
- Three $40,000 4X third prize winners
- One $50,000 5X prize winner
- Two $100,000 10X prize winners
The New York Lottery remains North America’s largest and most profitable lottery system. For the 2024–25 fiscal year, it contributed $3.6 billion in Lottery Aid to Education statewide.
