Massachusetts Man Convicted in Fatal Elmira Bar Shooting

A Massachusetts man has been found guilty in connection with a deadly shooting that took place outside an Elmira bar in 2024.

The Chemung County District Attorney’s Office announced that 29-year-old Dante Baldwin, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was convicted Monday of Murder and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon following a week-long trial in Chemung County Court.

The charges stem from the May 20, 2024, shooting of 44-year-old Norman Cherry, who was gunned down just before 11 p.m. outside Gush’s Thirsty Bear on Grand Central Avenue. Cherry was shot six times and rushed to Arnot-Ogden Hospital before being transferred to Robert Packer Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Baldwin was arrested last October in Springfield, MA, and extradited to New York to face charges.

During the trial, Baldwin took the stand in his own defense, claiming Cherry attempted to draw a gun on him. However, the jury rejected that claim and returned a guilty verdict.

Baldwin now faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
