New Yorkers who are supporters of the nationwide “Make Polluters Pay” campaign will gather at the State Capitol this week with some pledging to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience and risk arrest if necessary to underscore what they say is the “urgency of the climate crisis.”
The Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday sit-in demands Governor Kathy Hochul sign the “Climate Change Superfund Act” which supports say is part of a growing national movement to hold Big Oil accountable with similar legislation being considered in Massachusetts, California, and Maryland, and recently passed in Vermont.
The action comes as more than 100 environmental and consumer organizations delivered a letter urging the Governor to require fossil fuel companies to pay for the climate destruction they knowingly caused. Protestors say for over half a century, these companies chose to prioritize profits over climate action, running deliberate disinformation campaigns despite their own scientists warning of catastrophic climate effects. As Maine Attorney General Aaron M. Frey recently stated, “In so doing, they burdened the State and our citizens with the consequences of their greed and deception.”
