If Kathy Hochul decides to run for re-election in 2026, she’ll have to find a new running mate. Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado announced on X Monday he will not seek re-election with Governor Hochul next year.
In the social media post, Delgado said he remains quote “deeply committed to finishing my full term, as I was independently elected to do, by the people of New York.”
Delgado was appointed by Hochul to Lieutenant Governor in May of 2022 after Brian Benjamin resigned. He ran for a full term as lieutenant governor alongside Hochul in November of that year and was elected to a full term.
A spokesperson for Governor Hochul seemingly took a shot at Delgado when reacting to the news of her Lieutenant Governor’s future:
“Today, Antonio Delgado finally said out loud what has been obvious for quite some time: he is simply not interested in doing the job of the Lieutenant Governor of the State of New York. Governor Hochul had already begun taking steps to identify a new running mate for 2026. We will also be reallocating responsibilities within the administration to ensure that important initiatives that had been within the Lieutenant Governor’s office are no longer neglected. Governor Hochul wishes him the best in his future endeavors.”
