Changes to New York’s bail reform laws were approved as part of the state’s fiscal year 2024 budget passed earlier this year.
Assemblyman John Lemondes says the changes make no difference to combatting crime. He told Finger Lakes News Radio judges need more power when determining bail.
“Hampering our judges in anyway when it comes determining the dangerousness of someone with respect to releasing them back into our society, their neighborhoods, their cities, that has to be restored in full,” Lemondes said.
Bail reform in New York has seen much criticism from elected officials and the public since being enacted in 2019.
