In response to reports the state Legislature is close to passing “Clean Slate” legislation before session adjourns this week, one local Assemblyman calls the bill pro-criminal and a threat to public safety.
“It’s become abundantly clear that for New York City liberals, public safety matters a whole lot less than the rights of criminals,” Lemondes said. “Clean Slate would rob many employers from making an informed hiring decision and potentially puts their business and employees at risk.
Assemblyman John Lemondes said Clean Slate would rob many employers from making an informed hiring decision and potentially puts their business and employees at risk.
“Day care providers could unknowingly hire a violent felon, banks could unknowingly hire someone convicted of wire fraud and crimes as serious as murder would have no record under this law. Furthermore, defense contractors and those granting security clearances may mistakenly hire or qualify an individual convicted of spying or espionage. Actions have consequences and it’s not harsh to say individuals should’ve thought about that before hurting others and committing crimes,” Lemondes said.
The Clean Slate legislation would seal the criminal records of many individuals who were convicted of, and served their time for, misdemeanors and felonies.
