The New York State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian incident that occurred Thursday afternoon on I-390 southbound near the Lyell Avenue overpass in the town of Gates.
At around noon, the Gates Police Department engaged in the foot pursuit of a larceny suspect who had fled a nearby retail store. The suspect ran down the embankment during the pursuit and entered the southbound lanes of I-390, where he was struck by a southbound vehicle.
The pedestrian, a 33-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS.
The operator of the involved vehicle, Ronald Bandemer of Rochester remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Bandemer was transported to Highland Hospital for evaluation and has since been released.
I-390 southbound was closed at Lexington Avenue for several hours while the scene was processed. Detours were put in place and have since been lifted.
At the request of the Gates Police Department, the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Collision Reconstruction Unit responded and are leading the crash investigation.
