A motorcyclist involved in a serious crash on Interstate 81 Saturday morning has died from his injuries, according to New York State Police.

Troopers say 28-year-old Austin Leonard of LaFayette was pronounced dead at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse on Saturday.

The crash occurred just after 7:30 a.m. on the northbound side of I-81. Investigators say 42-year-old Sean Ayers of Dundee was driving a 2001 Peterbilt tractor-trailer in the driving lane when a tire blew out. As Ayers slowed down to find a safe place to pull over, a second tractor-trailer, driven by 66-year-old Barbara Armstrong of Creston, Iowa, was in the passing lane, overtaking his vehicle.

Leonard, riding a 2008 Harley Davidson motorcycle, approached from behind and attempted to pass between the two trucks. After clearing them, he lost control, hit the guide rail on the west shoulder, and was ejected.

He was transported to the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Police have not announced any charges or citations at this time.
