A four-year-old girl has died after she was struck by a Panama Central School bus near Fletcher Elementary School in Jamestown on Monday morning.
The incident happened shortly after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Cole Avenue and Whitehill Avenue. Jamestown Police say officers provided first aid before the child was taken to UPMC Chautauqua, where she later died from her injuries.
According to Panama Central Schools Superintendent Emily Harvey, the bus had been transporting a Panama student for an out-of-district placement at the time. Neither the driver nor the student on the bus was injured.
The Jamestown Police Department is leading the investigation, with assistance from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Team and New York State Police.
Authorities have not publicly released the child’s identity. Jamestown Public Schools confirmed she was a “beloved member of the Fletcher Elementary School community.”
Superintendent Kevin Whitaker said, “We are heartbroken by this devastating news, and our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends. This is an unimaginable loss for the Fletcher community and for all of Jamestown Public Schools. The passing of a student affects us all, and our district stands ready to support our students, staff, and families in every way we can.”
