On New Year’s Day, an Onondaga County Sheriff’s Custody Deputy was assaulted while performing his duties at the Syracuse Justice Center.
According to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy entered the cell of 24-year-old Nyitaire Nelson to remove the garbage when Nelson allegedly attacked him, striking the deputy multiple times with closed fists.
The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) and additional deputies responded quickly, successfully restraining Nelson and bringing the assault to an end. The injured deputy was transported to Upstate Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and later released.
In connection with this incident, Nelson has been charged with Felony Assault
