Gas prices are up slightly in New York and across the country in the wake of Hurricane Milton. According to AAA Western and Central New York, the New York State average on Monday is $3.24, up two cents from last Monday. One year ago, the New York State average was $3.82.
For drivers who use diesel fuel, the New York average is $3.93, no change from last Monday.
Back-to-back hurricanes put the brakes on the gas price Fall freefall, but only slightly. The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is up three cents, while the average in New York is up two pennies since last Monday. Hurricane Milton affected the demand for gas in areas with destroyed infrastructure, flooded roads, and power outages, but did not severely impact the supply of gasoline. While tensions in the Middle East persist, oil prices Monday morning are parked in the mid-to-high 70s per barrel.
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand surged over the last week while total domestic stocks plunged. That drop is likely short-lived, however, as gasoline production increased during that period. The arrival of cheaper winter-blend gasoline soon will also take pressure off pump prices.
