House Bill Passes to Rename Avon Post Office in Honor of Fallen RPD Officer

Congresswoman Claudia Tenney announced Monday that the U.S. House of Representatives has unanimously approved her bipartisan bill to rename the post office at 80 Prospect Street in Avon in honor of fallen Rochester Police Officer Anthony “Tony” Mazurkiewicz.

The legislation received broad support, with nearly the entire New York Congressional Delegation signing on as co-sponsors.

Officer Mazurkiewicz, an Avon native, began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Rochester Police Department in 1993. Over his 35-year career, he earned numerous awards, including the Life Saving Award, Officer of the Month, 17 Excellent Police Service Awards, and 32 Chief’s Letters of Commendation. He served in the Clinton and Goodman Sections and later with the RPD Tactical Unit, where colleagues widely respected him for his professionalism and courage.

Mazurkiewicz was shot and killed in the line of duty in July 2022. He is survived by his wife, four children, three grandchildren, and a large extended family.

Tenney said renaming the Avon Post Office provides a lasting tribute to an officer who “dedicated his life to protecting our community with unmatched courage, integrity, and selfless service.”

Mazurkiewicz’s wife, Lynn, expressed gratitude on behalf of the family, saying the dedication ensures her husband’s name and legacy will continue to be remembered in the community where he grew up.

The bill now advances to the Senate.
