The IRS has as many as 1-million backlogged claims for a pandemic era tax credit.
That’s according to US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand who is calling on the IRS to address its backlog and issue Employee Retention Credit (ERC) refunds to the nonprofits and small businesses that filed for them.
“At the height of the pandemic, thousands of small businesses did the right thing and kept their employees on payroll,” said Senator Gillibrand. “They were promised reimbursement, but years after the fact, they still haven’t received it. I am calling on the IRS to speed up its processing to fix this problem as soon as possible and get our hard-working small business owners the refunds they deserve.”
In a letter to IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel, she says she continues to hear from businesses across New York which have yet to receive refunds for claims made in March of 2021.
The ERC was created in 2020 to provide tax relief for businesses that kept employees on their payroll during the COVID-19 pandemic.
