Gas Prices Continue to Fall Heading Into Christmas

SHARE NOW

Motorists continue to see a decline in the average price of gasoline in New York. AAA of Western and Central New York on Monday said the state average for a gallon was $3.41, down seven cents from one week ago. One year ago, the state average was $3.50.  Monday’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline was $3.07, down eight cents from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.15.

Gas prices moved steadily lower over the last week with the national average trimming eight cents to $3.07 for a gallon of regular. Lower oil prices continue to drive the decline as the average price for a barrel of oil has fallen from the $80s into the low to mid-$70s

According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased slightly last week but remains seasonally low. AAA is forecasting nearly 104 million Americans will drive 50 miles or more from home during the 10-day holiday period from December 23 through January 1 so demand will likely increase through the end of the year. If oil prices remain low, drivers can expect gas prices to follow suit during the holidays.

Diesel prices are also dropping. The national average price for diesel is $4.00, down 10 cents from last Monday, and down from $4.78 a year ago. The New York average for diesel is $4.51, down four cents from a week ago, and lower than $5.48 one year ago.
