Four Marcy Correctional Officers Sentenced for Roles in Brooks Death

Four former correction officers at the Marcy Correctional Facility in Upstate New York were sentenced Friday in Oneida County Court for their roles in the 2023 beating death of inmate Robert Brooks, a case that has drawn widespread attention due to graphic video evidence shown during the proceedings.

Nicholas Anzalone and Anthony Farina were each sentenced to 22 years in prison on manslaughter charges. Michael Shaw and David Walters received sentences of less than 10 years after all four defendants entered guilty pleas earlier this year.

Back in August, Christopher Walrath was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the death of Brooks.

According to prosecutors, body camera footage showed multiple officers punching, kicking, and grabbing Brooks by the neck on December 9, 2024, the day he was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy. Brooks, 43, died the next day.

Brooks, of Rochester, was serving a 12-year sentence for assault in a stabbing case involving his girlfriend. His release had been scheduled for 2026.

10 officers were charged in connection with Brooks’ death.
