A soldier at Fort Drum is accused of murdering a fellow soldier.
WWNY-TV reports Specialist Riley Birbilas has been charged with premeditated murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the death of 21-year-old Specialist Jacob Ashton. Both men served as members of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
Ashton was found dead on post on August 5th. Any further details about the nature of his death were not released by the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
Originally from Kodiak, Alaska, Birbilas joined the Army in 2021 and has deployed to Iraq. He is being held in pretrial confinement.
