A former Oneida County Sheriff’s deputy will go to trial after rejecting a plea deal in a case involving an attempted arson.
Aaron Alshaman, who served with the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, is accused of setting fire to his girlfriend’s home on Kellogg Road in Utica in April while on duty. The blaze allegedly endangered his girlfriend, her child, and her parents, though no injuries were reported.
WSYR-TV reports Alshaman faces four counts of second-degree attempted murder and one count of second-degree arson. He declined a plea deal that would have resulted in a 20-year prison sentence. The case will now proceed to trial before Judge Robert Bauer in Oneida County Court.
