The man accused of fatally stabbing a Salina resident in Onondaga County, an incident that led to a 13-hour standoff with SWAT officers, was named by deputies over the weekend.
Raoof Mustafa, 47, allegedly stabbed 38-year-old Taiwo Ogunsola on Friday, Jan. 9, at a home on Sunflower Drive, the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office said. Ogunsola was transported to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition and later died from his injuries.
Mustafa has been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree arson, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
During the standoff, deputies said Mustafa set multiple fires inside 543 Sunflower Drive, where he had barricaded himself. SWAT officers eventually entered the home early Saturday, finding Mustafa in the attic. He suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital before being transferred to the Onondaga County Justice Center.
Voter records indicate Ogunsola lived at 541 Sunflower Drive, part of a duplex that includes 543 Sunflower Drive. Deputies said it is not yet clear whether Mustafa lived at the home or was visiting someone he knew there. Officials are also still investigating whether the suspect and victim were acquainted.
The standoff began around 3:41 p.m. Friday when deputies responded to reports of a stabbing and discovered Ogunsola with neck injuries.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
