An Elmira man is facing felony charges after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase Tuesday afternoon.

While patrolling the area of Hulbert Hollow Road, a State Trooper spotted a 2001 Chevy Silverado, parked and running at a home on Hulbert Hollow Road in the town of Van Etten. As the trooper approached the vehicle, he spotted two men inside with the driver smoking from a glass pipe.

When the Trooper attempted to make contact with the driver, 43-year-old Nathan Nehrbass fled in his car. After several miles, Nehrbass and his 17-year-old passenger abandoned the truck they were in a field and took off on foot. Both were taken into custody a short time later.

Nehrbass was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, both felonies. Nehrbass was also charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and several traffic infractions. He was sent to Chemung County Jail without bail.

The 17-year-old was released to a guardian.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
