The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets is urging consumers to heed the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) recall for BrucePac ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products due to possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall, originally issued on October 8, 2024, has expanded and now includes approximately 11.7 million pounds of product, according to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. To date, the USDA has not received any confirmed reports of illness connected to the consumption of these products.
The ready-to-eat meat and poultry items were produced from May 31, 2024, to October 8, 2024. USDA has said that these products were shipped to establishments and distributors nationwide and then distributed to restaurants, schools, and institutions. The products subject to recall have the establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” inside or under the USDA mark of inspection. Additionally, consumers should be aware that some of the recalled products could potentially have a different establishment number on the label due to further distribution and processing by other establishments.
Because these products may be stored for use at a later date, consumers, restaurants, institutions, schools, and other establishments are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers and not to serve or use these products. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
The Department is communicating with its State partners to ensure New York schools are notified and aware of this recall.
Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis, which can be a serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, cancer patients, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. It can cause short-term, flu-like symptoms, such as high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea in healthy people.
