DEC Warning of Invasive Insect in NYS

SHARE NOW

The Department of Environmental Conservation is warning of a new exotic pest in New York.

Elm Zigzag Sawfly larvae can cause severe leaf loss as they chew a distinctive zigzag pattern in the leaves of elm trees.

Native to parts of China and Japan, the invasive insect was first confirmed in the state in August of last year in St Laurence County.

The DEC says early detection is key to stopping the spread of the fly, and anyone who notices zigzag patterns on elm tree leaves or suspicious defoliation is asked to report it on the iMapInvasives website, or email photos to [email protected].
