The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is now accepting applications for $851,255 in Volunteer Fire Capacity grants, which support rural fire departments in protecting public safety and natural resources. The deadline to apply is December 22, 2025.
DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said volunteer fire departments play a critical role in working with Forest Rangers to combat wildfires statewide. “The Volunteer Fire Capacity grant program helps support fire personnel in these departments with the resources they need to continue the vital work protecting our communities and state lands,” she said.
The program is funded by the U.S. Forest Service and administered by DEC’s Division of Forest Protection. Eligible departments can receive 50/50 matching funds of up to $3,500, an increase of $1,000 from last year. In 2024, 345 fire departments received funding.
To qualify, departments must be at least 80 percent volunteer and provide wildland fire protection to rural areas within their jurisdiction. Award recipients are required to complete all necessary grant paperwork.
Funds may be used only for expenses directly tied to wildland firefighting, including protective gear, communications equipment, hoses, tools, and water delivery systems such as dry hydrants and cisterns. Items not directly related to firefighting—such as search and rescue equipment, land purchases, facility construction, major vehicle purchases, or maintenance supplies—are not eligible.
Applications and additional information are available by contacting DEC at (518) 402-8839, by writing to the Division of Forest Protection at 625 Broadway, Albany, or by visiting the DEC website.
