DEC: Manlius Swans Can’t Reproduce

SHARE NOW

The state Department of Environmental Conservation has issued the village of Manlius a permit allowing them to keep their four iconic baby swans, but the village can’t allow the swans to reproduce. That’s a change from last summer when the DEC permit allowed the village to have swans that could produce

Village officials say they will fight the new permit requirements. The change comes after an 18-year-old stole the mother swan, killed it, and ate it last May. Four baby swans were stolen and later recovered. They are back in the village’s swan pond.

The 18-year-old was sentenced last week to three months probation and 45 hours of community service.
