A New York State Trooper based out of Nassau County has resigned following his arrest on a felony charge of tampering with physical evidence.
According to State Police Superintendent Steven G. James and the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office, on October 30th, at around 11:45 p.m., former Trooper Mascia reported he had been shot in the leg while checking on a disabled car in the median on the Southern State Parkway in the area of Exit 17. The 27-year-old was taken to a local hospital for treatment for a gunshot wound to his right leg. The report also triggered an intense search to locate the car described by Mascia.
An investigation into the incident determined Mascia shot himself in the leg before making the false report to State Police. There was no evidence found to substantiate his story of stopping in the median of the Parkway to check on a disabled car.
A subsequent search warrant at the Mascia family home in West Hempstead resulted in the seizure of a firearm that was illegally possessed. Troopers also arrested 62-year-old Thomas Mascia, Senior, and 55-year-old Dorothy Mascia, also of West Hempstead, on a felony charge of criminal possession of a firearm.
In addition to the felony, former Trooper Mascia was charged with falsely reporting an incident and official misconduct, both misdemeanors.
