Court: DOT Can Tear Down I-81 Viaduct

SHARE NOW

The State Court’s Fourth Appellate Division will allow the State Department of Transportation to continue the I-81 renovation project in Syracuse without a lower court’s limitations.

“After a court ruling from the Appellate Division, we can now definitively say that the I-81 Viaduct – which has literally divided the City of Syracuse for decades – is coming down,” said Governor Kathy Hochul in a statement. “This favorable resolution of the State Department of Transportation’s appeal allows the entire project to move ahead as scheduled, including the eventual demolition of the Viaduct. There’s more work to do to reunite and reconnect communities in Syracuse and today’s decision is a landmark step in the right direction.”

It was almost one year ago when a State Supreme Court Justice banned any type of demolition of the viaduct in Downtown Syracuse and ordered the State DOT do an Environmental Impact Statement related to storm water, air quality and the Micron development in Clay.
