A congressional bill takes aim at New York’s plan to phase out gas connections in buildings.
The Energy Choice Act would prohibit state or local governments from banning an energy service’s connection, reconnection, modification, installation, or expansion based on the type or source of energy to be delivered.
Led by Congressman Nick Langworthy (NY-23), the bill is cosponsored by Claudia Tenney (NY-24), Dan Newhouse (WA-04), Tony Gonzales (TX-23), Mike Lawler (NY-17), Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11), Tom McClintock (CA-5), Jim Moylan (GU-AL), David Valadao (CA-22), and Clay Higgins (LA-03).
As part of the fiscal year 2024 budget, New York is requiring the majority of new buildings to use all-electric heating and cooking by 2026.
“President Biden and Governor Hochul continue to squash American energy production and infringe on Americans’ right to choose how they heat their homes by implementing legislation to make energy for our communities less reliable and more expensive,” said Congresswoman Tenney. “The Energy Choice Act would prevent any attacks by state or local governments on energy choice, ensuring all Americans can use the energy source that works best for them and their family. The Left must end their war on natural gas and stop restricting Americans’ access to affordable and reliable energy!”
