New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli says his office is now returning more than $2 million a day in unclaimed funds to residents across the state.
Unclaimed funds come from sources like forgotten bank accounts, utility deposits, uncashed checks, trust funds, and unused gift cards. DiNapoli’s Office of Unclaimed Funds (OUF) is working to make the process of reclaiming lost money faster and easier—including mailing checks directly to eligible New Yorkers.
Thanks to a new law spearheaded by DiNapoli, the state began sending checks automatically in January for newly reported accounts of $250 or less.
To help more people claim their money, OUF staff attend community events statewide, offering on-site help with the search and claim process.
Residents can also search for unclaimed funds and submit claims online at osc.ny.gov/unclaimed-funds or by calling 1-800-221-9311. A searchable map showing how much is owed by county and region is also available on the site.
