A Monday investigation into stolen merchandise at an Onondaga County department store led to a car crash and multiple charges for the suspects.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Kohl’s on Route 31 in Clay around 8:45p for the report of six females leaving the store with carts full of unpaid merchandise before fleeing in an SUV.

While on patrol, deputies spotted the vehicle on I-481 S near the I-81 S interchange and attempted to stop the SUV, but it fled south on I-81. It struck another vehicle at the Spencer Street Exit and the six then left on foot. Five of them were arrested at the scene but the driver was unable to be located.

The SUV was found to have been stolen.

18-year-old Janiyah Savage-Hope, 19-year-old Neveah Gunn, and 21-year-old Nataisa Bownes, all of Syracuse, along with a 15 and a 17-year-old were charged with Grand Larceny, Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle without owner consent, and Conspiracy.

The three adults were taken to the Justice Center to await arraignment.
