A Chemung County Sheriff’s Deputy suffered only minor injuries after her patrol car was hit by a semi-tractor trailer hauling milk on Interstate 86 near the Steuben County line.
Deputy Kaitlyn Fletcher was parked partially on the shoulder of the road at the rear of a one-car accident in the eastbound lane of I-86 at around 7 Friday night. According to the sheriff’s office, due to poor lighting and the location of the accident, more deputies responded to add visibility and ensure a safe scene. After activating her directional signal to instruct all traffic to move over to the passing lane, the milk hauler reportedly failed to do so and struck the driver-side rear of the patrol car, sending it off the shoulder of the road and down an embankment, causing extensive damage.
Deputy Fletcher was treated at Corning Hospital for minor injuries and released. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not hurt.
State Police investigated the accident and charged the tractor-trailer driver with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
