U.S. Customs and Border Protection is reminding travelers planning to enter the United States through land border crossings to prepare ahead of time to avoid delays or problems at the border.
Officials say travelers should make sure they have the proper documents before arriving at a port of entry. Accepted forms of identification include passports, U.S. visas when required, lawful permanent resident cards, U.S. passport cards, and enhanced driver’s licenses.
Travelers entering the United States through the Visa Waiver Program must also obtain approval through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization, known as ESTA, before attempting to cross the border. Authorities say travelers who arrive without an approved authorization will not be allowed to enter and must return to Canada to complete the application process, which can take several days.
CBP is also encouraging travelers to check border wait times before heading to a crossing. Wait times and traffic conditions can be viewed on the CBP website or through the agency’s Border Wait Time mobile app.
Officials also remind travelers to declare all items they are bringing into the country, including gifts and duty-free purchases. Certain agricultural products, such as fruits, meats, and plants, are restricted and should be checked ahead of time on the CBP website.
Travelers are also advised that marijuana remains illegal under federal law in the United States and should not be brought across the border.
