Assembly Republicans Speak Out Against Hochul’s Proposed High-Rise Plan

Assembly Republicans are speaking out against the Governor’s high-rise plan which seeks to create affordable multi-unit housing throughout the state.

Assemblyman Brian Manktelow was joined by other members of the assembly at a press conference Tuesday at the State Capitol to critique the housing plan included in Governor Hochul’s proposed Executive Budget.

“This plan put forth by the Governor is nothing but another unfunded mandate pushed to local municipalities at a time when they are focusing on preserving farmland, caring for our aging population, and keeping the hardworking families safe.”

Republicans say the plan would mandate rural and suburban communities construct such housing within three years, regardless of local community approval.

Below is the full statement from Assemblyman Manktelow:

“We are a region that cares deeply about preserving our natural resources, promoting local agriculture, and lending a hand to a friend in need. These are the values that run deep in each and every one of our communities. This plan put forth by the Governor is nothing but another unfunded mandate pushed to local municipalities at a time when they are focusing on preserving farmland, caring for our aging population, and keeping the hardworking families safe. Asking the taxpayers to foot the bill for more housing is absurd when 41 of the 62 counties have a housing vacancy rate of over 10%. We shouldn’t be focused on building new homes that will inevitably take away our open space, we should be focused on rebuilding and investing into the infrastructure that is already in place. I am pleased that this proposal was not included in the Assembly one-house budget, and I will fight tooth and nail to see that it is not included in the final budget.”
