Following an investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office, a state trooper has been justified in the 2023 fatal shooting of a suspect in Monroe County.
According to the attorney general’s Office of Special Investigation report, the incident happened just before 9:30p on August 6, 2023, when a trooper was pursuing a vehicle on I-490 in Rochester after Daniel Legler refused to stop for a traffic stop. Ledger was driving westbound on the left shoulder of the highway going as fast as 100mph at some points.
After exiting the highway at the Rochester Tech Park in Gates, Legler struck a guardrail and then hit a curb becoming airborne and landing in a field.
Trooper Dominick Caito exited his vehicle and ordered Ledger to remain in his vehicle; however, Legler left his vehicle and began reaching into his waistband while moving to the other side of the car. He was then told to show his hands which he did not.
After being told to turn around and allow himself to be placed under arrest, a struggle ensued when Caito attempted to place Legler under arrest.
When the trooper saw a gun in Legler’s hand, he fired his weapon. Legler was told to remain on the ground but he attempted to stand up; Caito then fired his gun again, hitting Legler.
Legler was pronounced dead at the scene.
