Stability is the trend at the pump as October begins, according to AAA of Western and Central New York.
The statewide average for regular gas is $3.18, down two cents from last week and slightly lower than the $3.23 New Yorkers were paying one year ago. Diesel in New York is averaging $3.89, down just a penny from last week.
Nationally, the average price for regular gas is $3.14, nearly unchanged from a week ago, while diesel remains steady at $3.68 per gallon.
AAA notes that fall typically brings lower pump prices as demand drops and stations transition to less expensive winter-blend gasoline. A robust global crude supply is also helping to keep prices in check, even as some U.S. refineries go offline for seasonal maintenance.
Crude oil is holding steady in the low to mid-$60s per barrel. The Energy Information Administration reports gas demand has slipped slightly, supply is up, and production is declining — all factors contributing to stable or lower prices.
