Gas prices across New York have ticked down, according to the latest update from AAA of Western and Central New York. The state average is now $3.20 per gallon, three cents lower than last week and six cents less than a year ago, when it stood at $3.26.
For comparison, the national average is $3.14 per gallon, down four cents from last week and eight cents lower than this time last year.
Fall is officially here, bringing lower gas prices. And some signs point to continued relief at the pump. Refineries are no longer required to produce summer-blend gasoline and can begin switching to winter-blend, which is cheaper to produce. The Atlantic hurricane season is halfway over with little disruption, but the tropics remain a concern for the next two months if there’s storm activity in the Gulf that affects refineries in the area. Meanwhile, oil prices remain low in the mid to high $60s per barrel.
According to data from the Energy Information Administration, gas demand is up slightly while supply is down, and production is on the rise. Diesel prices are stable. The national average $3.68 – down a penny from last week. The New York average is $3.90, the same as the last two weeks.
