A 21-year-old Upstate New York man who has worked for the City of Gloversville Police Department for over a year is facing criminal charges following a more than month-long investigation.

According to New York State Police, on May 7th, the City of Gloversville Police Department Administration brought to light serious allegations of misconduct against Chance Petteys, who the Department hired in April of 2023. The State Police investigation revealed Petteys had reportedly abused his authority by utilizing computer equipment to access records, including sensitive personal information and past police interactions, along with deactivating his body-worn camera to conceal his acts. Petteys allegedly accessed records without any legitimate law enforcement purposes and on multiple occasions used that information to contact individuals in an unprofessional manner following police interactions.

Petteys, who lives in Johnstown, surrendered himself to SP Fonda. He was arrested and processed on Computer Trespass, Official Misconduct, Unauthorized Use of a Computer, and Tampering with Public Records in the second degree. charges. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Gloversville City Court on June 24 and released.

During the course of the investigation, Petteys was placed on administrative leave, and the City of Gloversville Police Department demonstrated full cooperation. Furthermore, the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office and the New York State Attorney General’s Law Enforcement Misconduct Investigative Office were promptly informed. The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office has recused themselves and the case has been reassigned to a special prosecutor from the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office.

Anyone who believes they may also have been a victim of Petteys is asked to contact SP Fonda at 518-457-6811 or email [email protected].
