The 2025 income tax filing season officially begins Monday. Both the New York State Tax Department and the IRS will start accepting and processing income tax returns on that date. The deadline to file and pay any taxes owed—or to request an extension—is midnight on April 15, 2026.
Many New Yorkers can file both federal and state returns at no cost using the Tax Department’s Free File program. Each year, hundreds of thousands of taxpayers use this service, saving an average of $269 in preparation fees.
“Free File is a secure, efficient, and completely free way to file for those who qualify,” said New York State Acting Tax Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “Eligible taxpayers are encouraged to take advantage of this service to save on tax preparation costs.”
Free File is available in multiple languages at www.tax.ny.gov.
