Nearly $200 million in food assistance is coming to help over 1.5 million low-income children in New York. Governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that funding comes from the new Summer EBT program.
“And so, making sure that our kids get the nutrition they need to grow up healthy and strong is one of my top priorities. No child should ever, ever go hungry because the cost of living was just too damn high for their parents and their families.”
$120 per child will help eligible families pay for healthy meals.
Some families have already begun to receive their benefits with more being sent in the coming weeks. Hochul added that the state expects approximately two million New York children to qualify for the program.
The Summer EBT program is a new federally funded program that states were able to opt into. New York opted into the program covering half of the administrative costs involved in distributing the funds.
Eligibility and application information for the program can be found here. The deadline to apply is September 3.
