A Yates County correction officer has been fired and charged with driving while intoxicated after showing up to work under the influence of alcohol.
The Sheriff’s Office says 32-year-old Bruce J. Hansen of Penn Yan arrived for his shift at the Yates County Public Safety Building around 3 p.m. on Tuesday and appeared impaired. Correction supervisors were notified, and an investigation determined Hansen had consumed alcohol before driving to work in his personal vehicle.
Deputies say Hansen failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He later submitted to a chemical test confirming a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or higher. Hansen was charged with DWI, processed, and released with tickets to appear in Penn Yan Village Court at a later date.
Sheriff’s officials say Hansen’s employment was immediately terminated. In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office commended staff for handling the incident professionally and reminded the public that impaired driving is a serious crime with life-changing consequences.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
