A welfare check conducted by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office in the town of Locke turned into an hours-long standoff on Sunday night.
Deputies discovered 62-year-old Michael Yaw at the home, allegedly in violation of a court-issued order of protection.
When officers attempted to make contact, Yaw reportedly armed himself with a long gun and barricaded himself inside the home. A third person was inside the residence and unable to leave, officials report.
After several hours of negotiating with Yaw, authorities were able to secure an arrest warrant for criminal contempt. The standoff finally ended when Yaw sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the shoulder and surrendered.
Yaw was taken to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening injury. He remains in the sheriff’s custody and will be formally arrested once he is released from medical care.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation; the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
