A Cayuga County man who previously served nearly two decades in prison for rape has been arrested on a new felony charge.
The Auburn Police Department said Scott Barrieau, 56, of Weedsport, was taken into custody Wednesday on an indictment warrant following an investigation into his registered address. Police allege Barrieau failed to report an accurate address, a requirement for convicted sex offenders.
Barrieau was convicted in 2004 after pleading guilty to first-degree rape and robbery charges stemming from a 2003 attack at a State Street bar in Auburn. Prosecutors said the assault involved a bartender who was attacked inside the business after being restrained.
He was sentenced to 19 2/3 to 23 years in prison and was released in 2023. Following his release, Barrieau was designated a Level 3 sex offender and a sexually violent offender.
Police said the current charge, failing to register a correct address, is a Class E felony.
Barrieau was taken to the Cayuga County Jail, where he is being held pending arraignment.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
