A Schuyler County man is in custody following an almost 12-hour standoff with police on Wednesday.
As deputies were investigating an accident in the 3700 block of Cross Road just after 9 Wednesday morning, Dennis Thompson became verbally confrontational with law enforcement from the front porch of his home. It was known that the 43-year-old Watkins Glen man had an active felony arrest warrant and several attempts made to speak with him were unsuccessful. At around 8:30 in the evening, a Tactical Team from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office entered the home and took Thompson into custody without incident.
Cross Road was closed to all traffic during the incident.
Thompson was charged with felony criminal contempt along with misdemeanor charges of menacing and endangering the welfare of a child after a domestic violence incident at his home. He was brought to the Schuyler County Jail to await CAP arraignment.
The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Schuyler County Emergency Management, Schuyler EMS, Watkins Glen Police Department, Watkins Glen Fire Department, Montour Falls Fire Department, Chemung County Sheriff’s Office Special Services Unit, Steuben County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, and the New York State Police.
