Police say two Elmira residents are responsible for a rash of break-ins in Steuben County.
36-year-old Zachary Smith and 20-year-old Trent Johnson are accused of stealing a shotgun, motorcycles, and electronic equipment from homes in the village of Canisteo and the town of Howard. After receiving a tip as to the possible location of the stolen goods, a search warrant was executed in the city of Elmira and a vast majority of the items were recovered, including the shotgun.
Smith and Johnson were charged with burglary and grand larceny and were released following their arraignment.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
