A Bath man and a Prattsburgh woman have been indicted following an investigation into alleged witness intimidation and criminal contempt, according to New York State Police.
Investigators say 52-year-old Terry Long, of Bath and 52-year-old Tammy Havens, of Prattsburgh, were accused of contacting a protected party in an ongoing criminal case in an attempt to influence testimony.
The investigation began in June after the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office reported that the victim had received messages from Havens on behalf of Long, who was incarcerated at the time. Police say Long directed Havens to pressure the victim to recant sworn statements, offering property in exchange and making threats through electronic messages.
Havens was arrested in June and charged with criminal facilitation and fourth-degree tampering with a witness. She was taken to the Steuben County Jail and an order of protection was issued for the victim.
After a grand jury review, both Long and Havens were indicted on October 14. Long was formally processed on the new charges earlier this week after being transported from state custody to SP Bath.
Long faces charges of bribing a witness, aggravated family offense, fourth-degree witness tampering, and second-degree criminal contempt. He has since been returned to state custody.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
