Two Bath Residents Arrested on 16 Counts of Animal Cruelty

SHARE NOW

Two residents of the village of Bath are under arrest after being indicted on multiple charges, including 16 counts of animal cruelty.

The arrest of 33-year-old Arthur Gilbert and 28-year-old Catherine Wheeler stems from an investigation that started in February involving two children and multiple cats. A Superior Court indictment charges the two with reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, all felonies, along with misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and animal cruelty.

Following their arrests, Wheeler and Gilbert were sent to Steuben County Jail to await arraignment.

The Bath Police Department was assisted by Steuben County Child Protective Services, Village of Bath Code Enforcement, the Finger Lakes SPCA, and the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
