New York State Police have arrested two men in connection with a series of retail larcenies at Bass Pro Shops in the Fingerlakes Mall in Aurelius.
State Police say the investigation focused on multiple thefts that occurred on December 18, 19, and 21, with stolen merchandise valued at over $3,000.
The suspects have been identified as 42-year-old Zachary Rathburn, of East Syracuse, and 42-year-old Corey Scott, also of East Syracuse. Both were arrested and charged with:
- Grand Larceny in the 3rd degree (D felony)
- Conspiracy in the 5th degree (A misdemeanor)
Investigators say the two men worked together to steal hunting and outdoor equipment over multiple days. Surveillance footage and tips from the public helped identify the suspects.
Further investigation revealed that Rathburn was also connected to previous thefts at Sunglass Hut, a separate store inside Bass Pro Shops, on May 10 and May 12. Those thefts involved multiple pairs of sunglasses with a total value of more than $2,800. Rathburn was additionally charged with:
- Grand Larceny in the 4th degree (E felony)
- Petit Larceny (A misdemeanor)
Scott was taken into custody on January 5, and Rathburn on January 9. Both were processed at SP Auburn and transported to Cayuga County Jail for CAP arraignment.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
