A routine traffic stop in Auburn early Thursday morning led to the arrest of two people and the seizure of more than 30 grams of crack cocaine.
Auburn Police say they pulled over a vehicle on State Street around 3:11 a.m. after discovering the driver, Jessica Simmonds, was operating without insurance. During the stop, officers also learned Simmonds had a suspended driver’s license.
Further investigation led officers to find multiple white chunk substances, drug paraphernalia, a digital scale, and a quantity of cash. The substances tested positive for crack cocaine, with a total weight of 31.8 grams.
Simmonds was charged with two felony counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance and one misdemeanor count of Aggravated Unlicensed Operation. She was processed and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment.
A passenger in the vehicle, Leigh Rusin, was also arrested after officers discovered an active warrant out of Cayuga County Court. Rusin was taken into custody without incident.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
