SHARE NOW

Investigators with the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office say they apprehended a Lansing man following a lengthy investigation into a series of storage facility burglaries.

The investigation, which began in November 2025, focused on a string of break-ins at multiple storage units across Tompkins County. Using Flock Safety technology, investigators developed a vehicle description associated with the crimes. During surveillance on February 5, 2026, authorities allegedly observed Jarrod Nickerson inside a storage unit that did not belong to him, with a lock that had been cut off.

Nickerson, 36, was charged with Burglary in the Third Degree, a Class D felony. Following his arrest, he was arraigned in the Tompkins County Centralized Arraignment Part and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail.

On Friday, the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed a search warrant at Nickerson’s residence. The search resulted in the recovery of several items previously reported stolen, along with a large quantity of additional suspected stolen property, including tools, household goods, and family heirlooms valued in the thousands of dollars.

Authorities estimate that approximately 25 individuals or families across multiple counties were affected by the burglary spree. Investigators are currently working to catalog the recovered items and return them to their rightful owners. Additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
