A Hornell man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly attempting to assault a Steuben County sheriff’s deputy during a shoplifting investigation.
Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard reports that deputies responded to a retail store in the Town of Hornellsville on December 12 following a report of shoplifting. The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Adrian Palmer.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies later went to Palmer’s residence, where he allegedly confirmed the larceny. Authorities say that when deputies attempted to take Palmer into custody, he physically resisted arrest and produced a knife, attempting to stab one of the deputies in the face. Deputies were able to disarm Palmer and take him into custody without further incident.
Palmer was charged with attempted assault in the first degree, a Class C felony; menacing a police officer, a Class D felony; criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree; petit larceny; and resisting arrest.
He was arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and remanded to custody in lieu of $1,000 cash bail.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
