A close call for Cayuga County Sheriff’s deputies when they were nearly struck by a drunk driver.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were handling a disabled motor vehicle complaint on East Genesee Street Rd in Sennett just before 10:00p last Thursday.
Deputies were outside their patrol vehicles with flashing lights activated. As they saw a vehicle approaching they waited to open their doors to enter their patrol cars. The vehicle failed to move over and the deputies fled to avoid being struck.
Deputies then got in their cars and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver originally kept driving but then abruptly came to a stop.
64-year-old William Maffei of Sennett is alleged to have been operating the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Reckless Endangerment, both misdemeanors.
Following arraignment, he was released and is scheduled to appear in Sennett Town Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
